As long as I pay AT&T, I don’t think it matters that I want to use my “unlimited” (5GB) iPhone data plan with my laptop. I pay them for Uverse TV/Internet, home phone and two iPhones. They get almost $350/month out of me. Really AT&T, would it be too much to ask you to just allow me to tether my iPhone via Bluetooth. I have done it before with an old Nokia phone so I know it’s possible on your network.

I just updated to WP 2.8 and it was fast and convenient. Why? Because those wonderful folks at WordPress have decided to add an update feature into the software itself. Not novel on desktop software, but really hard to do on websites.

Blogs often have their own software installed like themes and various plugins. They just get in the way and cause problems when updating a website. In this case, all I had to do was press upgrade and away it went.

Nice WordPress, very nice.

Why?

I would love to say it’s because I get a lot of traffic to this site and I plan on retiring off the income. But, the real reason is because, like so many others, I am simply looking to offset the hosting cost. I dont’ expect to make much off this new addition to the site. I expect it will be not much more that coffee money. But hey, every little bit helps.

I am not complaining.

[Update] Made $0.50! Whoo Hoo!

I have a friend at church that has asked me repeatedly about the possibility of either a podcasting or live streaming our church sermons. Actually, Fr. Bob’s sermons. Anyway, I told him that from all the reading I have done on the web and folks at work, it seems possible and faily straight forward. What do we need? Here’s the list I have so far:

Willing pastor. Gotta get the OK before you put someone’s voice for all to hear. Especially in churches like our where other people come to the microphone for prayers and reading the Bible lessons for that week.

Sound system. Without it, you would have to get a recorder somehow attached to the pastor’s microphone or record directly to the recorder.

The aforementioned recorder. There seem to be several on the market that can do the job. Many come with stereo and mono capabilities, MP3 recording (going for universal here), capacity and USB connectivity.

Audio editing software. This comes with every Mac sold these days. You can also get free software for the PC.

Podcasting software. We will be using either a WordPress install with podcast plugin or Joomla with a podcast module. Either should work, though I have not used them before this project.

Willing volunteer. Here is where it gets tricky. You have to line up someone or a group of people who are willing to be responsible for the sermoncast. It’s easy to put the above mentioned items into place, but someone has to do the editing and uploading.

Currently, we have a church website, but it lacks a podcast module. I can take care of that fairly quickly. I can also purchase an audio recorder. While a youth minister does not have an unlimited budget, he can ask the outreach coordinator about putting it into his budget. Especially if that is the friend asking about the sermoncast at the top of this post.

I digress.

As for a willing volunteer, I am thinking one of the youth would be best. They are on the computer often, it gives them a real active part in our ministry and they have time most adults can only dream about. That’s my plan. I hope to have someone lined up soon. After that, getting the recorder and testing should be fun.

Here at work, I had a conversation recently with my supervisor about informing our members when new functions are available on the member portal. His feeling is that we should not do it. I was thinking it would be good internal PR and an opportunity to keep them abreast of what changes are taking place and at what frequency. I understood his position and we did not create a Twitter account as that was my suggestion for posting the data.

However, I wish we had done it. Especially for member organizations with many opportunities for connecting, this might be a good way to let them know about a new tweak or update.

I just downloaded and went through a trying time to get Mariner Software’s WinJournal to connect to this blog. It was not easy. Try as I might, I could not get it to see the blog’s login page. By the way, it was looking for the xmlprx.php page on the WordPress install, should you be intrepid.

Once I got connected, I downloaded all the blog entries. That went fairly quick. Next, I tried to edit an existing post, just to see how it worked. It didn’t. Some of the text was unprintable character code and the paragraph’s were off.

I looked at another post, this one with unordered lists. The html links from them to others websites went outside of the existing anchor tag <a></a> and looked bad.

I am quite disappointed. I was hoping to get my wife a good piece of software that she could journal or even post to the blog. Looks like I will keep looking.

Also, the layout was not very nice. It was clean, but looked more like a Mac interpretation of a Windows program. I like my Mac, but want each platform’s design standards to be followed, even on offerings from the same vendor.

In my haste to put up a post with the new WordPress app for my iPhone, I neglected to actually look over at the Red Sweater site to see if there will be a MarsEdit version for the iPhone. Of course there will be. The developer (Daniel) is just patiently working on it. Do I blame him? No. In fact, I am rather glad he is taking his time. I am looking forward to a full featured app that is like the one I am working on right now.

I love MarsEdit and can’t imagine using anything else.

Take your time Daniel, I’ll be waiting to download it as soon as you put it up.
